Description

I had been gaming on a PS4 since it came out, but one day I learned about the PC world. For about 2 months, I dedicated a ton of time to researching and learning about PC parts and building computers. I had a budget of $1000 for my PC and tried to create a PC focused at 1080p gaming with a 144 hz monitor and to also look fairly nice. I had a lot of money saved up and was ready to put it to use on something.

My main decision was if I was going to go with Intel or AMD and I ended up going with AMD because of the great price to performance ratio. I heard a lot of praise concerning the RTX 2060 and it fit my budget perfectly so I went for it. After 2 months I ordered all of my parts and received everything within a week.

Building the PC went fairly smooth (my only fault being forgetting to plug in the CPU power cable) and the parts all fit nicely together. I did have to manually set the ram to 3000 mhz though as it was automatically set to 2133. TechSource and Bitwit helped me a lot to complete the process of building the computer. In the future, I plan to pick up an aftermarket cooler or aio liquid cooler so I can overclock my cpu farther, but for now I am fine using the stock cooler.

Let me know if you have on comments, critiques, or suggestions on what you would've done and I'll be sure to read them :)

Part Reviews

CPU

Great price to performance cpu. No problems with it so far

Motherboard

Good budget B450 motherboard that works great. BIOS is not too confusing too. I do wish that it had an adressable RGB header on it though.

Storage

Insanely cheap for a 500GB SSD, only problem I had is that you have to update the drivers on it or else you will experience random, short freezes.

Video Card

Great card for 1080 or 1440 gaming that is quiet and looks really nice

Case

Well built case for the price, Only comes with one fan, no rubber grommets, and few tie down points in the back. Kinda wish i got an H500 or Meshify C

Power Supply

Does the job, have had no problems

Case Fan

They look great and perform well. They can get a little loud though and I wasn't able to put any static colors on them with the limited color options on the included mini controller. I had to get software control for lighting customization using the MasterPlus software which didn't work at first because I had to update the firmware on the mini controller. I also had to stealth route a micro usb cable from the controller to a usb port on the back of my motherboard through a pcie bracket

Custom

Super cheap great looking sleeved cable extensions. They stay right where they are when you shape them into place.

Nicely done! I thought it was custom at first but I dig that the case's PSU shroud has a small rectangular cutout for the GPU PCIe cable.

My also built my PC with the R5 2600 and RTX 2060 combo! I feel like the performance you get is well worth the overall build cost.

Have you experimented with overclocking on the stock cooler yet? Please share the results with us!

Looks great! I just finished a build in the P350X too, love the colors. It really goes well with the whole aesthetic of your desk area.

I'm looking to get that same case and mobo and some argb fans. How did you connect the case rgb and fan rgb to the mobo?

matthewle
  • 5 years 10 months ago

i didnt, i use the case buttons and fan rgb controller

JNF7
  • 5 years 10 months ago

Ah I see, I'll probably just go for a better mobo so I can connect the fans

matthewle
  • 5 years 10 months ago

you should look at the MSI B450 gaming pro carbon ac, its pretty much the next step up from this

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I dunno if I should wait on ryzen 3000 and Navi before I build

matthewle

i'd wait for ryzen zen 2

I don't know if I'm just being dumb, but where did you plug in the RGB cable from your case into your motherboard. The B450 Tomahawk doesn't have a 3 pin addressable RGB header, so where did you plug the RGB cable in.

Couple critiques, first of all the motherboard you have is nice but a little overpriced and I think you could have easily gotten away with some other cheaper b450 board(as you said you were only going to use the stock cooler so no overclocks) but in future builds you could reuse the motherboard for its features and overclocking. The gpu was a decent choice in my opinion. I probably would have gone amd in this price range with a rx 5700xt. You DEFINITELY need to spend more on storage, a 2 tb hdd should do the trick but just that small ssd is not going to hold you. I would have sourced more money towards mass storage. The cpu was an ok choice. Personally I would have gone with 3600 but cpu is a fine choice if you get what you wanted out of it. My last and probably most unimportant critique is the aesthetic. The fans just dont look good. I would have maybe gone with corsair light loop? Also you dont have rgb in the front. Having it all in the back makes it seem lopsided and kind of dull. I also think it wouldn't hurt to run an rgb strip up the left of your case? Just to add a little glow to it. Other than those things I pointed out amazing build

Edit: I know I'm literally a year late to the party but if you if you ever wanted to upgrade I think that still holds up.

Hey thanks for commenting! I don't know why the mobo cost so much now, but I bought it for $110. I did end up overclocking my CPU to 3.9 GHZ. Also, I Built this PC in March of 2019 before the 5700XT and the 3600 had come out. I agree that those are now better options for someone building this kind of PC today. I also later added a 2TB hard drive to add more storage.

I did a google and found that 3600mhz memory was a thing. With that know you could've got faster RAM speeds for a couple bucks or a 3200mhz RAM for like 10 to 5 dollars cheaper. In short I think it be better if you upgraded your RAM speeds.

Here's a link of the RAM I would like to go with: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/zgpmP6/corsair-vengeance-rgb-pro-16-gb-2-x-8-gb-ddr4-3600-memory-cmw16gx4m2d3600c18w

What drivers did you have to update cause of the short freezes caused by the SSD? I think I'm experiencing the same problem.

How did you plug in the argb fans into the motherboard, because last I checked that MB doesn't have argb headers?

Min3craftderp
  • 4 years 4 months ago

it might be worth it to have a hard drive for storage and the SSD for major stuff like windows 10, chrome, stuff like that other then that great build!!
